Common Furnace Issues

Like any mechanical system, furnaces can experience issues that require repairs such as:

Ignition Problems

Furnaces use various ignition systems, including pilot lights, electronic igniters, or hot surface igniters, to start the burner and generate heat. Ignition problems, such as a malfunctioning pilot light or a faulty igniter, can prevent the furnace from starting or cause it to cycle on and off frequently.

Airflow Restrictions

Restricted airflow can lead to overheating, damage to the furnace components, and reduced heating efficiency. Common causes of airflow restrictions include dirty air filters, blocked vents or registers, blower motor or fan issues.

Blower Motor Problems

The blower motor is responsible for circulating heated air throughout your home. Problems with the blower motor, such as worn bearings, a faulty capacitor, or a malfunctioning motor, can result in reduced airflow, uneven heating, or complete system failure.

Dirty or Clogged Burner Assembly

Over time, the burner assembly can become dirty or clogged with dust, dirt, or debris, affecting the combustion process and efficiency of the furnace. A dirty burner assembly may cause the furnace to produce insufficient heat, emit strange odors, or generate soot or carbon monoxide.

Cracked Heat Exchanger

The heat exchanger transfers heat from the combustion chamber to the air supply. Over time, it can develop cracks or leaks, which can lead to carbon monoxide leaks, reduced heating efficiency, or complete system failure.

Gas Valve Issues

Problems with the gas valve, such as a stuck valve or gas line obstruction, can prevent the furnace from igniting or cause it to produce insufficient heat. Gas valve issues require prompt attention to ensure safety and proper furnace operation.

FAQs

  • How often should A/C filters be changed?

As a general rule, you should do a visual inspection monthly and change the filter.  If the filters appear to be getting dirty sooner, then change them more frequently.  A filter that does not flow properly will cause your unit to work harder, therefore, increasing your energy cost.   In addition, a clogged air filter makes your unit run hotter and put more strain on your system which shortens its life span. It is the best maintenance & most cost-effective thing you can do for comfort, energy saving, and system longevity.

  • How long should an A/C run on a 100-degree day?

According to Energy.gov, 68 degrees is a good room temperature while you’re awake and at home, but it can be set lower when no one is home or during sleep hours. You can reduce your annual cooling and heating costs by up to 10 percent by turning down your thermostat 7-10 degrees for eight hours a day.

  • How long can an A/C run continuously?
You can run your air conditioner all day long on hot days if you need to. It won’t harm your unit, as long as you don’t set the inside temperature too low, which could cause your system to overwork. During 100-degree days, it is best to set your AC to somewhere between 75 and 80 degrees.
